The ‘At The Pictures’ Project:
Three Cane Whale’s music has often been described by critics and audiences as “cinematic”, rooted as it is in specific landscapes and journeys, and now we’re bringing film into the heart of our live performance. Commissioned by and produced in partnership with St George’s Bristol, the Watershed, and the 2017 Filmic Festival, ‘At The Pictures’ sees the band performing live to twelve brand new short films created by thirteen filmmakers & visual artists in response to 3CW tunes of their choice – including cutting-edge animations, lo-fi shadow-puppetry, alfresco contemporary dance, and slowly shifting landscapes from Cornwall to the Lofoten Islands.
The Films & Filmmakers:
1. ‘The Trendle’ / Peter Northcott: motion designer and compositor, who has worked in animation, feature film, and TV since 2008. He currently works at ‘Preconstruct’, generating motion graphics stings, compositing, post-production and video editing for architectural visualisations. He has also produced work for A Productions, Aardman Commercial, and Rumpus Animation, amongst many others.
2. ‘Wingmore’ / Adam Laity: award-winning cinematographer, filmmaker, photographer and researcher, based in the South West. He was cinematographer on the 2016 feature-film “Brown Willy”, and dance-film “The Touch Diaries”, and is currently based at The Centre for Moving Image Research at the University of the West of England.
3. ‘Wavering Down’ / Brett Harvey: award-winning Cornish-based writer and director. He’s directed promo films for the likes of o-region, Kneehigh Theatre Company, Cscape Dance Company and Theatre Damfino, as well as the acclaimed feature films “Weekend Retreat” and “Brown Willy”, the latter to a 3CW soundtrack and described by The New Statesman as “Cornwall’s answer to ‘Withnail and I'”. Brett’s film features dancer & choreographer Emily Dobson.
4. ‘Gospel Pass’ / Reuben Knutson: artist and researcher, based in Aberystwyth, concerned with the ways in which art and film forms work with historical material. He currently teaches across film, media and fine art at Aberystwyth University, as well as producing films and live events individually, and as part of the audio-visual duo ‘Artic’ (with 3CW’s Pete Judge).
5. ‘Penda’s Fen’ / Oliver Cullen: scriptwriter and director, based in Bristol. His film “The Attendant”, a surreal romantic comedy, won ‘Best Comedy Short’ at the European Short Film Festival and ‘Best International Short Film’ at the LA Comedy Festival. His own production company has produced promotional films for universities, charities, bands and theatre productions.
6. ‘The Bronze Sounding’ / John Collingswood: multi-facetted artist based in Northern Finland. He generally works with sound, image, light and interactivity, creating responsive environments for dancers and other performers. John is the non-dancing half of the company TaikaBox.
7. ‘An Acre Of Watery Light’ / John Minton: Bristol-based UK filmmaker, known for his experimental, lo-fi, and hallucinatory style. John’s distinctive visual flair has lent itself to music videos and live projections for Noel Gallagher, Portishead, Savages, & Get The Blessing, amongst many others. John also edited the BAFTA-winning Short ‘September’ (Esther May Campbell 2009).
8. ‘Dancing Ledge’ / Emma Lazenby & Eleanor Glover: Emma is a Bristol-based animator, designer and director, who won a BAFTA in 2010 for her film ‘Mother of Many’. She co-founded ForMed Films CIC in 2015 to make films for medical education. Eleanor is an award-winning artist & maker who uses mixed media sculpture, shadow theatre, and book arts.

10. ‘Eggardon Hill’ / Mark Taylor, Paul Hill & Duncan Fraser: Mark is a highly experienced director and producer, and heads up Bristol-based “A Productions”, where Paul and Duncan also work as senior directors and animators. The studio has produced a huge range of award-winning work for clients around the world including the BBC, Nickelodeon, Sesame Workshop, C4, Disney, Freemantle & Penguin Books, plus lots more.

12. ‘Moon In A Bottle’ / Kathy Hinde: creator of audio-visual installations and performances that combine sound, sculpture, image and light, from Europe & Scandinavia to China, Pakistan, USA, Colombia, Brazil & New Zealand. Kathy received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2015 for her installation ‘Tipping Point’, whilst ‘Piano Migrations’ was runner up for the Sonic Arts Award 2014 and listed for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2014.
